The mission of African Hope Committee, Inc. (AHC), is to serve as a bridge between mainstream service delivery systems and the newly arrived immigrant population, creating partnerships and the coordination of services. Since its founding, AHC staff has disseminated over 60,000 informational literatures on HIV/AIDS education and prevention, STD’s, and maternal child health to over 15,000 individuals, including women, young girls and their families within the African immigrant community, as well as those from other immigrant minority groups. AHC successfully organized six Annual Health Summits, over 25 Community forums, seminars and various outreach activities in the New York Metropolitan Area. Other major accomplishments include raising awareness on HIV&AIDS, organizing enlightenment workshops, conducting Focus Group Discussions targeted at women and young girls and summits for Health Care Providers and Community Members/Participants.
AHC is a 501(c)3 organization. It provides much needed health education and information to immigrants topics such as HIV/AIDS, diabetes, mental health, asthma, obesity, smoking cessation, pregnancy, childbirth, etc. These activities serve to lessen the burdens of the government by providing information vital to the welfare of the community and quality of life. It also serves to combat community deterioration by informing the public of health risks and ways to stay healthy and avoid contamination. Individuals trained and educated in the respective areas of health facilitate these workshops and other educational events. AHC provides case management and a referral program which includes referrals to health insurance, employment, child care, immunization, GED, food pantries, housing, and immigration services.
